Shimba Hills . Shimba Hills National Reserve offers one of the last remain coastal rain forests on earth. It is also famed as the only Kenyan habitat of the rare and magnificent sable antelope. Shimba happens to be the home to some of the oldest plants on earth: the fern-like cycads are the last survivors of a species. This trip is available full day or half day depending on ones budget and needs.
Shimba Hills
You will be picked from your hotel in the morning at 6:00am and drive to Shimba hills National park for game viewing with a guided walk to the Sheldrick falls. Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small National Park in the Coast Province of Kenya, 40 km from Mombasa and 25 km from Diani.
The reserve is an area of coastal rain forest, woodland and grassland. It is an important area for plant biodiversity – over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found in the Shimba Hills, including some endangered species of cycad and orchids. It is also a nationally important site for birds and butterflies.
There were estimated to be approximately 700 elephants in the reserve. This population has decreased nowadays, North of the Reserve, is Mwaluganje elephant sanctuary established to provide a route for elephants to leave the park due to the Overwhelming numbers. After the Sheldrick falls walk you will have a short game drive en-route to the park gate for exit formalities then drive back to your hotel for lunch
